Notes from WCA’s Defining Moments: FAQs Posed to Seasoned Pastors

“I feel like we are in constant need of raising money, always for very good reasons. Can you give us 2 or 3 keys to leading a successful capital campaign?” 

Bill Hybels:

First, it is important to build a healthy stewardship culture in your church so that the vast majority of your people are tithing in the weekly offering.

If this is not done, you become obligated to a capital campaign rhythm.

During a capital campaign, there are different groups of people that need to be led and challenged differently – the high-capacity people who are financially blessed, the core who are faithfully tithing, and the “everybody else” who may not be giving on a regular basis. You need to message to each group differently. There are some people that need to be challenged personally to give. Most people will be flattered to be asked to give, not offended. While messaging and communications are important, it is vital to personally connect with the people you are challenging to give.
