Making Your Dream a Reality Part 15 – Paul Bangs

Guest Blogger Paul Bangs is an evangelist, motivational speaker, business trainer and life coach. He kindly responded to our request to provide an inspirational series for the ‘Lead & Learn’ site. Over the GLS season, Paul will be sharing how we can make our dream a reality. The programme is inspired by John C Maxwell’s book “Put Your Dream to the Test.”

There is Always a Price to Pay

You must be willing to pay the price to achieve your dream in time, effort, finance, emotions and sacrifice. You cannot achieve your dream without paying the price for it and every time you go to another level there is a greater price to pay.

If it’s only a desire you will never pay the full price; it’s got to be a fully fledged dream that you are willing to sacrifice for. Dreams are free but the journey isn’t – you have to make a transition from believing in the dream to buying into it and the price normally has to be paid sooner than you think.

Great athletes who have the dream of winning a gold medal at the Olympics understand that the paying of the price starts many years before the race or event. They also understand that the price they pay will be higher than they expect. You will only find out the true cost on the journey.

One note of caution: there are some dreams that are not worth pursuing, where the price is too high. If it will compromise your values, sacrifice your family or ruin your health. If you do sacrifice your family or health and achieve your dream you won’t enjoy the results. Let your values dictate your dream, not the other way round.

Don’t allow those who would criticise you stop you achieving your dream. There are always critics and negative people who will want to stop you and it can hurt, especially when it is from people who you care about. It is good to hear honest advice, think things through and sometimes other people might see something that you haven’t. But be careful not to listen to those who are just criticising you because they don’t have a dream of their own.

All dreams will (if they are worthwhile) be outside your comfort zone; leaving that zone is the price we have to pay. Don’t live in fear, but sometimes it’s good to be afraid, as it can preserve life or stop us making big mistakes.

To be continued…
