Life and Leadership – Tracee McAtear – 7

Tracee McAtearInterview series from 2019 with church leader, Tracee McAtear.

Could you tell us a bit more about your discipleship training?

It is a simple rhythm at its core each Thursday night. We don’t want to reinvent the wheel so we try to use courses that are well-developed and tried and tested to take our people from new or even pre-faith through to giving them a core foundation of faith, to discover who they are in Christ and to activate them into living as an active disciple of Jesus.

Throughout an academic year we run the Alpha course, Freedom in Christ, and the SHAPE course. We have developed courses over the years focusing on training leaders, reading the bible and evangelism. We occasionally run one-off courses on apologetics and relationships to meet particular needs or challenges we sense in the congregation. We like to use multimedia courses that mix a presenter with video clips, and small group discussion led by a facilitator is quite effective. We find people are more responsive to UK presentations than those from Australia or the US.  We are a very mixed church in all our demographics and this approach works well for us.

It has been challenging facilitating the courses without a permanent facility, but the weekly rhythm has allowed people to build great relationships.  We are always looking at how we can increase the effectiveness of our discipleship development. For example, right now we are creating one-day condensed courses on Saturdays for people who can’t make weeknights. We feel like we’re just scratching the surface of discipleship development and are keen to explore how we can build the relational aspect of discipleship in a safe, natural and effective way.
