Developing a Strategic Plan – Conflict

Notes from WCA’s Defining Moments: Conflict: Having the Tough Conversations

Developing a Strategic Plan

A. The situation

  1. Willow Creek’s ministries were each experiencing such growth and were focusing so much on their own areas that the church began to lose its identity.
  2. The ministry “fiefdoms” had existed unchallenged for so long that asking them to act more holistically felt like a bait and switch.
  3. The leadership had to communicate that getting everyone on the same page was better for the whole church and for each ministry’s part of it.

B. Lessons learned

  1. Strategic planning is fun in the beginning, but much of the conflict starts with implementation.
  2. Start the strategic planning process knowing that the result is not going to be pain-free.
