Life and Leadership – Roger Fairhead – 6

Roger Fairhead

Interview series with leadership specialist, Roger Fairhead

How does calling fit with passion and purpose?

Self-awareness is key if you want to develop your abilities and pursue a passion. I’m indebted to John Maxwell for his teaching in this respect. He helps you explore what you would like to do based on the simple principle that you must ‘know yourself to grow yourself.’ When you think you have arrived at your answer, he then asks the probing question: Can you do what you would like to do?*

You can have passion and ability but still know it isn’t right to pursue it vocationally. Throughout my life I have had a passion for music.  I currently play the violin in my local amateur Symphony Orchestra, and I play bass guitar most weeks in the worship band at my local church.  When I was a teenager, I performed a violin solo and someone in the audience offered me a musical scholarship sponsorship. In the end I turned them down because I knew that I didn’t have enough passion to practice for several hours a day, even if I had the potential to perform at a high level (which I don’t think I do).  I still love to play music, but it has been so much better to keep it as an enjoyable hobby. Shows such as ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ are filled with people who have an enjoyable hobby, a calling which will never become a career.

A calling becomes a career when you are willing to pay the price. I knew that I would never have the passion to practice playing violin for hours a day, but I know that I have happily spent countless hours working on my career as a leadership speaker, coach and trainer. I have also received unsolicited feedback from those I admire and respect, and from those I would want to work with to validate the question, “can I do what I want to do?”.

*For more on this, Roger recommends reading John Maxwell’s book, The 15 Invaluable Laws of Growth, chapter 2: The Law of Self-Awareness.
