Life and Leadership – Roger Fairhead – 11
Interview series with leadership specialist, Roger Fairhead
It’s evident from some of your answers that you’re a man of faith. How does that fit in with your work, if at all?
I came to faith at the age of 23 after graduating from Loughborough University. Since then, it has been an important part of my life. I have served on the leadership teams of churches and other ministries, and enjoyed leading small bible study groups.
Over the years I have found that God has been leading me into new and unexpected areas. I have felt His hand at work on the course and direction of my professional life. When I had the opportunity to start my own business nearly 20 years ago, it was a move that was prayerfully inspired through my daily devotional time, supported wholeheartedly by my family, and confirmed through my relationships with several close Christian friends.
One thing led to another. For the most part, my new career involved commission-only sales. I sold a high ticket, highly secure online database product. As part of this, I delivered the product training to new customers. Over time, I found the training aspect far more fulfilling than the selling. In fact, one of the attractions of making a sale was the opportunity to deliver the training!
Along the way, I became increasingly interested in leadership. I discovered the books by leadership expert, John C Maxwell. I attended the Global Leadership Summit every year and avidly read the books by its speakers. I came to discover what I describe as ‘Kingdom Principles.’ The leadership principles which in my business experience had worked well were the same principles that John Maxwell and the GLS speakers all wrote about. Ken Blanchard summed it up well when he said that after becoming Christian later in his life, he found that every leadership principle he had discovered in his career was displayed in and through the life of Jesus Christ.
I saw a need and started to coach church leaders – it launched me into leadership training. Pastors shared with me that while they had received years of theological training, little of it covered leadership in practice! I began to deliver material based on my experiences in work and in ministry, and reinforced it with the great teaching I had received from John Maxwell, the ‘Million Leaders Mandate,’ and the GLS. Some years later, I sensed God telling me that I would be embarking on a new career ‘next year.’ I had no clue what that new career would be, so I discussed it with family, friends and my study group. Around the same time, several other things came together to lead me into the new direction that my career has now taken.
I learned to trust the dots! Steve Jobs once said, ‘You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future.’ Whilst coaching pastors, I was also volunteering for Church Online with Life.Church. During this time, I entered their ‘Chazown Experience’ which helped me discover what God had in mind for my life. A key exercise in this was looking back over my life story. As a result, I started to understand where the dots were pointing and this was soon to be confirmed.
I stayed open to opportunities and worked hard at them. After a while volunteering with Church Online, I signed up to be a ‘host,’ which led me to become a Host Team Leader, then a Community Leader and subsequently – at the same time I was contemplating the new career – the first Church Online Host Team Coach. (We now have a small team of Coaches and Pastors which provides leadership to over 350 hosts from 40 countries around the world.) At the same time, I had the opportunity to join the John Maxwell Team (JMT) which marked the turning point. I turned my attention to becoming a certified JMT Speaker, Coach and Trainer.
These things have led to my current career. My brand is, ‘Leadership for Business.’ I bring leadership development through speaking, coaching and training mainly to Chief Executives and their Senior Management Teams in business, education and the social sector.
New opportunities are enabling me to do what I do best. I am still involved with Life.Church as a Host Team Coach and I have also become a Director of the Global Leadership Network UK & Ireland. Both are unpaid positions which allow me to engage with leadership development and training for Christians in a largely church context. At my very core, I love to help difference makers make a difference.
