Going Deep – Dave Edwins

light on deep water

‘What might happen if a church made the development of deep people its highest priority? What if a church decided that it’s pastor’s greatest responsibility was to lead the effort to produce a continuous flow of deep people?’ Gordon MacDonald, Going Deep, Preface

It was during 2013 that we discovered Gordon MacDonald’s book Going Deep. As a group of church leaders we all read the book and were challenged to take the plunge and put it into practice in our Baptist Church at Christchurch, Dorset.

In the book Gordon describes the journey that he and his leaders took some years previously when they implemented an intensive discipleship course, which would help, identify and train new leaders. Gordon & Gail have opened their home each year since, to a new chosen group of potential leaders who they want to see going deeper with God in their lives.

A small group of us were tasked to develop our own course, as although Gordon gives hints throughout the book about the course they built up, it is not provided for you to use! We planned a modular course lasting a year from January to December 2014.

The modules lasted about 5 or 6 weeks and covered subjects like:

  • Who am I? – where we tackled some of the Shape Course
  • Spiritual gifts
  • Leadership principles
  • Spiritual disciplines
  • Biblical leaders
  • Basic Bible doctrines
  • and Our Life stories.

We allowed some gaps for Easter and Summer etc and were thrilled that a group of seven committed to attend the 37 weeks of the course. There were assignments, presentations and lots of discussion as well as some straight teaching. Each evening lasted about two hours and a team of five was involved in sharing the material. Like the Macdonald’s we also called our course CDP, Cultivating Deeper People.

We were thrilled by the diligence of the participants who we hand picked at the beginning and it was such a thrill to see them grow! There were a variety of ages and both men and women. We are so excited and are ready to start to plan our second course starting in September 2015. It was tough to commit to many evenings but we as leaders grew too.

We recommend that you read the book and be prepared for the exciting journey that God will take you on too.
