Every Day’s a Day at School

Blackboard, books and apple

Dear Friends

Well here we are on the verge of the autumn term, a new beginning for the children in our churches as they move on up in school.

Within the familiar routine there will be wonderful opportunities for learning and growth as well as potential challenges and distractions also; new knowledge, new friendships, new rivalries and new discoveries about themselves which they may or may not like. How will they fare?

And how about the rest of us?

Wallace Pepper, WCA UK/IRE chairman, often says to me with something of a twinkle in his eye, “Everyday is a day at school!”

Indeed.

Liz Wiseman will say as much in her GLS session this Autumn, Why Learning Beats Knowing.

Being something of a thinker and a learner, it’s tempting for me to be content with just the head stuff. Take this last month at Willow, listening to Harvey Carey, Pete Scazzero and Henry Cloud. The danger is that in being lifted by such brilliant teaching, I can often feel as though I have already achieved what is being taught (I am a great disciple – in theory).

Come the end of this Autumn term, when I’ll have ‘gone to school’ and been exposed to more brilliant teaching through the GLS, will I just have accumulated more knowledge or actually grown a little by my learning?

This week I had a great discussion about developing discipleship in church, looking at various resources and approaches. Only afterwards it struck me that I hadn’t thought of the most obvious way – how to model it! I’ll never forget what James Emery White said along these lines at our iDisciple Conference a couple of years ago:

“When we meet a real disciple, it startles us.”

At the start of this Autumn term then, a new beginning for the children in our churches, let’s seek to do them a big favour and demonstrate what a whole life of learning and growth can look like.

All the best
