Life and Leadership – Tracee McAtear – 5

Tracee McAtearInterview series from 2019 with church leader, Tracee McAtear.

What’s the secret to managing the juggle of leadership with life, marriage and family?

Practical things like looking after your health are really important. We are mindful of what we eat, of including some form of physical activity in our day and getting good, regular rest. We are protective of our weekly sabbath and of taking our holidays.

It’s always been our goal to build the church team so that it can function well when we’re not there. Otherwise, we would not have been able to make the trip back to Australia every now and again and reconnect with our family and friends. This has allowed others to step up into the leadership opportunities in a natural way.

Generally I feel like if we’re good as a couple and as a family then we can handle whatever comes our way with church and work. One of the challenges of working together is that I can never get away from the boss! If I have had a particularly challenging day, I don’t have the luxury of coming home to the hubby and having a whinge about the boss and receiving a sympathetic ear. I think this would be the scenario for many couples or families that run their own business.

We don’t have many fights as a couple but when we do they’re often about church, partly because we’re so passionate about it. Other than that, it’s about lunch when we’re on vacation (dinner is much easier!). Over the years we have tried to define separate areas of responsibility according to our strengths and then released each other into those. It’s an interesting dance and we don’t always nail it, but we both hugely enjoy what we do, so we are determined to make it work.  We feel incredibly privileged to be the pastors of Connect Church!
